The Grizzlies pulled off a huge rally to move within a victory of the franchise’s first Western Conference final.
Tony Allen scored on a driving layup to open overtime and the Grizzlies held off the Oklahoma City Thunder 103-97 Monday night to push the defending Western Conference champions to the edge of elimination.
But Memphis has yet to lose on its home court this postseason and now is 19-1 here since Feb. 8. They won their third straight overall and seventh in eight games to grab a 3-1 lead in this best-of-seven series with a win that left coach Lionel Hollins very impressed with the comeback.
“We are a team that just plays hard and doesn’t quit,” Hollins said. “We scratch. We claw. They said grit and grind. I don’t know what the heck that means, but we go out and we just battle. We compete. We’re not the most talented team that’s in More >
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to trade Marreese Speights, Wayne Ellington, Josh Selby and a future first-round draft pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Jon Leuer.
The trade Tuesday is the first big move by the Grizzlies’ new ownership and clears about $6 million in salary in getting Memphis under the luxury tax threshold this season. The Grizzlies rank fourth in the West and are 6-4 over their past 10 games after the NBA’s best start this season.
The deal gives the lottery-bound Cavs another first-round pick to improve a team entering Tuesday night’s home game against Boston with a 10-32 record – second-worst in the Eastern Conference. Speights also will help replace center Anderson Varejao who will miss the remainder of the season after developing a blood clot in his right lung.
Varejao remains hospitalized at The Cleveland Clinic.

The Memphis Grizzlies will try to prevent their season high-tying losing streak from reaching four games Friday night in a showdown with the Sacramento Kings at FedEx Forum.
The Grizzlies are mired in their second three-game slide of the season and dropped a 103-82 decision against the San Antonio Spurs Wednesday in the Alamo City. Rudy Gay, who missed Monday’s loss to the Los Angeles Clippers to attend his grandmother’s funeral, led Memphis with 17 points and eight rebounds.
Marc Gasol scored 12 points and Zach Randolph and Tony Allen each finished with 11 for the Grizzlies, who have lost three straight by double digits.
“Its just frustration right now,” said Allen. “Obviously we’re not playing like we started off so its back to the drawing board.”
