The Harbaugh brothers get another chance at the Super Bowl

0

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Joe Flacco outdueled Tom Brady, throwing three touchdown passes in the second half and leading the Baltimore Ravens to their first Super Bowl in 12 years with a 28-13 victory over the New England Patriots on Sunday for the AFC championship.

The win sets up the first Super Bowl coached by brothers, Baltimore’s John Harbaugh and San Francisco’s Jim. The 49ers won the NFC title earlier Sunday 28-24 at Atlanta.

The 49ers have been listed as 5-point favorites.

Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis‘ final season will conclude in two weeks in New Orleans; he was the MVP of the 2001 game, the Ravens’ only Super Bowl win.

Flacco had two touchdown passes to Anquan Boldin and one to Dennis Pitta as the Ravens outscored the Patriots 21-0 in the second half. Baltimore’s defense made Brady look ordinary and stymied the league’s top offense. Brady was 67-0 at home when leading at halftime.

49ers dig out of deficit, beat Falcons

Jim Harbaugh threw one of the all-time great temper tantrums ever recorded on television.

Within a matter of minutes, he was giving his San Francisco 49ers assistant coaches big back-slapping hugs because he and his team were on the way to the Super Bowl.

The 49ers overcame a questionable call on a catch by the Atlanta Falcons’ Harry Douglas (not to mention a missed call of offensive pass interference on Douglas) to make a stand deep in their own territory and hang on for a 28-24 comeback victory in Sunday’s thrilling NFC Championship Game.

The 49ers, who posted their first road playoff win since 1989, will appear in their first Super Bowl in 18 years. They will face the Baltimore Ravens or New England Patriots two weeks from Sunday in Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans.

A matchup with the Ravens would pit Jim Harbaugh against his brother, John Harbaugh, More >

The Eagles to hire Chip Kelly

1

Oregon coach Chip Kelly will be the new coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, league sources told ESPN.

Kelly re-emerged as a candidate recently and an agreement was just reached Wednesday.

The Eagles had interviewed Kelly early in its search for a replacement for longtime coach Andy Reid, talking to the coach in Arizona after the Ducks’ 35-17 Fiesta Bowl victory over Kansas State.

But sources had told ESPN after the meeting that Kelly had decided to stay at Oregon. The school never made an official announcement regarding Kelly’s employment with the team, however.

Kelly is 46-7 in four years as head coach at Oregon. The Ducks have been to four straight BCS bowl games — including a bid for the national championship against Auburn two seasons ago — and have won three Pac-12 championships.

He originally came to the Ducks in 2007 as offensive coordinator under Mike Bellotti. Before that, he More >
