Lakers owner Jerry Buss dies at 80

Few have ever succeeded at making such a daunting climb, from the nightmarish depths of utter poverty and hopelessness to the soaring heights of unimaginable wealth and power.

At the age of 4, Jerry Buss was standing in a bread line on the frozen soil of Evanston, Wyo., a gunny sack in hand, waiting for the food that would keep him and his single mother, Jesse, alive for another day.

It was 1937, the lingering effects of the Great Depression still gripping parts of the nation.

By the time he had turned 6, Buss’ duties had expanded to include trekking around town in search of old telephone books or other paper products that could be stuffed into the fireplace to provide warmth in a house devoid of heat.

By the time he was 34, exactly three decades after he had stood in that bread line, Buss had made his More >

Rondo tears right ACL Celtics season over?

Boston Celtics star point guard Rajon Rondo will miss the rest of the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

The news came during Boston’s 100-98 double-overtime win over the Miami Heat on Sunday in which Ray Allen returned to his old home court for the first time.

For the past five seasons, Pierce, Allen and Kevin Garnett made up the Big Three. After Allen signed with the Heat as a free agent in the offseason, Rondo joined that group – and became the team leader with his ability to run the offense.

He was chosen as the starting point guard for the Eastern Conference in the All-Star game in Houston on Feb. 17.

Now the Celtics hope he can be ready for the start of next season.

”How far is that?” coach Doc Rivers said, ”I don’t even know how long that is. Eight months? Nine months? So More >

Memphis Grizzlies and Clevand Cavaliers agree to multi-player trade

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to trade Marreese Speights, Wayne Ellington, Josh Selby and a future first-round draft pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Jon Leuer.

The trade Tuesday is the first big move by the Grizzlies’ new ownership and clears about $6 million in salary in getting Memphis under the luxury tax threshold this season. The Grizzlies rank fourth in the West and are 6-4 over their past 10 games after the NBA’s best start this season.

The deal gives the lottery-bound Cavs another first-round pick to improve a team entering Tuesday night’s home game against Boston with a 10-32 record – second-worst in the Eastern Conference. Speights also will help replace center Anderson Varejao who will miss the remainder of the season after developing a blood clot in his right lung.

Varejao remains hospitalized at The Cleveland Clinic.

The Memphis Grizzlies will try to prevent their season high-tying losing streak from reaching four games Friday night in a showdown with the Sacramento Kings at FedEx Forum.

The Grizzlies are mired in their second three-game slide of the season and dropped a 103-82 decision against the San Antonio Spurs Wednesday in the Alamo City. Rudy Gay, who missed Monday’s loss to the Los Angeles Clippers to attend his grandmother’s funeral, led Memphis with 17 points and eight rebounds.

Marc Gasol scored 12 points and Zach Randolph and Tony Allen each finished with 11 for the Grizzlies, who have lost three straight by double digits.

“Its just frustration right now,” said Allen. “Obviously we’re not playing like we started off so its back to the drawing board.”

Memphis’ skid comes on the heels of a four-game winning streak. Known for their tight defense,
